Bow Windows

Bow Windows

You Asked, and We Listened!
Due to high customer demand, we have worked to create the Groovy Bow Windows. Our bow
windows increase natural light and brighten your yurt’s living space. They also add a second
entry point and can help create airflow for greater ventilation. When we first asked our team in
Mongolia about these windows, they were skeptical, and asked "Why"?

The Mongolian time-honoured design does not include windows. These Nomadic herders need
to move from one place to another quickly. Therefore, inserting and removing windows would
not be efficient for them. North Americans, however, are more stationary for longer periods. We
strive to find a balance between respecting the authentic design of the yurt and meeting the needs  of our customers.

The authentic Mongolian ger is the result of over 3000 years of fine-tuning. We have just a few
years of experience with the bow windows. Needless to say, our windows are a work in progress!
Adding windows to your yurt does compromise the structure slightly and can make it vulnerable
to leaks and heat loss.

The Mongolian windows are single-glazed and therefore less efficient than double-glazed
windows. To increase heat or solar gain, you may add a layer of felt or insulating curtains to your
windows. You may also decide to replace the single-glazed windows with double-glazed ones.
Call us for tips and recommendations. The bow windows are available in 3 sizes and two
options. A fixed window, that remains closed or an open window that, as the name suggests,
opens. The bow windows follow the yurt’s curve and are available in individual sections (see
table for dimensions). Each section can be inserted into the circumference of the yurt as is, or
connected to one or more windows. They can also be connected to the main door.

The bow windows come with a small wood awning and a canvas cover that we recommend using in harsh weather conditions or when the yurt is not in use. Each bow window section is made of two 4mm single-tempered glass panels. These windows can be retrofitted into a yurt that has  already been set up.
