Why Buy A Groovy Platform?

Our SIP panels are assembled with a simple tongue and groove system. This makes the entire platform easy to assemble and transport. SIPs are also structurally strong, rigid, and durable despite being made of relatively lightweight material. All of our platforms come with an 8" wide plywood rim board that surrounds the circumference of the platform. The rim board creates an enclosed perimeter around the circumference of the yurt that "corrals" the panels and prevents them from coming undone through heavy foot traffic, dance parties, and high lateral winds.

The rim boards also act as a deterrent for pests and water. It is the first layer of protection for the interior walls and felt. Because the panels are structural, they require only a basic substructure to support them.

Our platforms can be installed on a simple substructure or laid flat on a deck. Whatever the case, we strongly recommend the platform be elevated at least 10" off the ground. The advantages of building a simplified substructure can reduce the cost of lumber you'll need for traditional decks.

Our plans only require parallel beams spaced in 4' increments that are bridged and braced. For more detailed instructions on substructures, see the "Do It Yurt Self" section. It is crucial that the substructure or surface the platform is installed upon is level. If the platform is raised more than 16" from the ground, it is important to plan for a "catwalk" or a way to walk around the yurt during set-up. If left in place, it will also help future access for maintenance, snow clearing, etc...

SIP (Structural Insulated Platform) Panels

At the Groovy Farm, we manufacture and sell SIP Panel Platforms for our yurts. The platforms are made of 2" EPS Styrofoam and sandwiched between two sheets of plywood. At 2", EPS Foam has an R value of 7.

The total thickness of the platform works out to exactly 2 7/8", with no panels exceeding the dimensions of 4'x8'. They require a simple substructure.

For an additional charge, we offer to add a layer of Thompson Waterseal to the bottom side of the platform, along with 2 layers of brown, high quality latex varnish on the top side.
