Please Note: Your chimney options greatly depend on the size of the yurt you are purchasing!!
There are two options for venting your chimney either through the toono (center dome) or through the wall. For best radiation, we prefer installing the stove in the center of the yurt, especially in bigger sized yurts.
1. Venting Through The Toono (Center Dome):
General Overview of Parts:
To comply with code, we recommend using a 4 foot (48") insulated chimney pipe that extends 1 foot inside the yurt and 3 foot above the yurt.
5-Wall yurts and larger: Chimney Flashing and Bracket (Roof Support):
This option can be supplied by Groovy Yurts and includes the flashing (8” Opening for a 6” pipe with 1” insulation) and roof support (chimney bracket) installed on the toono (center dome). Most wood stoves use a 6" pipe.
The roof support is a metal belt that holds the chimney pipe in place. It is secured to the toono with two brackets.
It is important that the stove supports most of the chimney's weight and not the toono.
There are four companies that comply with the Canadian standard of ULC-S629 for WETT certification with only 1” of insulation for a 6” pipe, bringing the outside diameter to 8”.
These companies are: EXCEL, Duratec, Ultimate One and SBI Olympia Ventis 2100. Please note that the 1” insulated chimney pipes (with the Canadian standard of ULC-S629) are usually not readily available from local hardware stores and will need to be purchased from a wood stove supplier.
If you do live in the USA, there is a wider range of options for pipes with outside diameter of 8” for wood stoves. The pipe needs to be listed as UL-103HT to be able to comply with code.

Chimney EXCEL Pipe Kit for 5-Wall Yurts and larger:
You can source your EXCEL pipes from Groovy Yurts.
Our EXCEL PIPE KIT include:
- 4’ insulated pipe
- Rain cap
- spark arrester
- Flue extension (to connect the insulated pipe to the black pipe)
Attention: the black pipe to connect the rest of the distance to the stove is NOT included and can be sourced locally from your hardware store.
Alternatively, Excel pipes can be sourced from Friendly Fires, https://friendlyfires.ca/, using code: "groovylovesfriendly" to receive a 5% discount.
Please Note: This pipe kit is meant for 5-Wall yurts and larger. For a 4-Wall yurt with a 6" pipe you will need to purchase the round support, flashing and pipe kit as mentioned in the 4-wall section below.
3-Wall, 3-Wall High & 4-Wall yurts:
For smaller yurts we generally recommend buying a tiny house stove with a smaller diameter stove pipe to have enough space clearance through the toono (dome).
An insulated chimney pipe is recommended for the section going through the toono (dome). Some of our customers have opted for this double-wall chimney pipe for smaller diameter stove pipes:
The advantage of the Salamander over the Cubic Mini is that it has a 4” chimney pipe compared to the Cubic Mini's 3” chimney pipe. The smaller the chimney pipe, the more often it will need to be cleaned! The Salamander also offers the option of a back-boiler.
An important detail to consider when choosing a tiny house wood stove is the log size. Both of those stoves use very short logs, which need to be sourced accordingly.
Groovy Yurt's standard chimney flashing for smaller sized yurts:
3-Wall & 3-Wall High
3" pellet chimney flashing
4-Wall:
4" pellet chimney flashing
We recommend choosing your stove before ordering or adding a flashing to your 3-Wall, 3-Wall High or 4-Wall yurt in order to make sure that the size of flashing works for your stove as different tiny house stoves use different chimney sizes.
Check locally for code requirements for your tiny house stove.
Using a pellet stove is another great option as they require a much smaller chimney pipe. Pellet stoves offer the advantages of a wood stove, while allowing longer burn times. Most pellet stoves require a source of electricity.
4-Wall yurts using a wood stove with a 6" chimney pipe:
Using a special EXCEL round support in a 4-Wall Yurt allows to use a 6” chimney pipe with 1” insulation, while following code requirements. The portion of the wall/ceiling that holds the round support does not require the 2 inch clearance and combustibles can actually be in contact with it. EXCEL seems to be the only company requiring a 10”x10” framing for the round support, which does fit into our 4W toonos (center dome).
Note that all parts (rain cap, insulated chimney pipe, flue extension and round support) need to be sourced from the same manufacturer.
This option can be ordered from Groovy Yurts.
Black Stove Pipe:
From the insulated chimney section down to your stove you can either use regular single wall black stove pipe or double wall pipe. Double wall pipes filter creosote more effectively, thus making it the safer of the two options. Single wall black pipes are cheaper and radiate more heat while meeting code. Your local hardware store will probably offer the best prices for these items!
NOTE: For 7-wall yurts or larger, you will need double-wall pipes to account for the pipe’s proximity to your central posts (bagaans).
Approximate length of black pipe needed per yurt size:
3-Wall:
82 1/4” / 201cm minus the height of your stove
3-Wall High:
92.5” / 235cm minus the height of your stove
4-Wall:
84 .5” / 215cm minus the height of your stove
5-Wall:
91” / 230cm minus the height of your stove
Super Ger:
108” / 274cm minus the height of your stove
6-Wall:
96.5” / 243cm minus the height of your stove
7-Wall:
114.5” / 290cm minus the height of your stove
8-Wall:
118” / 300cm minus the height of your stove
We’ve found it easier to acquire one adjustable stove pipe section so that you can simply extend the pipe until it reaches into the next section. They come in a variety of adjustment ranges; an adjustment range of 28”- 50” is ideal.
Video on how to install a wood stove through the toono (center dome):
We always recommend having your stove and chimney installed by a professional. BUT, if you’re going to do it yurtself, here’s some helpful information to guide you through your endeavour.
Please note that we are not wood stove experts. We always recommend consulting with a local expert to abide by your municipal guidelines and safety standards.
Floor Protection / Stove Base:
A wood stove base, also called a hearth pad, typically needs to extend at least 18 inches in front of the stove opening and 8 inches past the sides, providing a non-combustible surface to protect the floor from potential sparks or embers falling from the appliance; materials like ceramic tile, stone, or thick brick are commonly used for this purpose.
Key points about wood stove base requirements:
Minimum extension:
The hearth pad should extend at least 18 inches in front of the stove door and 8 inches on each side.
Non-combustible material:
The base must be made from a non-combustible material like ceramic tile, stone, or fire-rated concrete.
Thickness:
The material should be thick enough to withstand heat and prevent cracking.
Level surface:
The hearth pad should be level and flush with the surrounding floor to avoid tripping hazards.
Check local codes:
Always consult local building codes and local regulations for specific requirements regarding wood stove installation and hearth pad specifications.
Please note that pellet stoves have different requirements when it comes to floor protection
2. Venting Through The Side:
"Chimney Through The Wall" - Option For Pellet Stoves:
For best radiation, we recommend having the stove in the center of the yurt, especially in bigger sized yurts. Having the chimney going out of the side is a good option, if you are planning to heat your yurt with a pellet stove.
The "Chimney Through The Wall" option can be sourced from Groovy Yurts and is a simple insulated frame that is inserted in the structure. The hole must be drilled by the customer.
This frame can be installed in the yurt structure like a window, but we recommend only cutting out the material (inner liner, felts, canvas) for the pipe hole, plus applicable clearance.
Here is a video that describes the process:
"Chimney Through The Wall" - Option for Wood Stoves:
While it is possible to install a chimney through the wall for a wood stove, this option is more complicated as fire regulations for wood stoves are different from pellet stoves:
The walls in most yurts are fairly low, requiring the install of a heat shield on the ceiling above the stove. The chimney will need to be supported on the outside of the yurt and the insulated pipe needs to be much longer, creating additional costs.
Please note the "Chimney Through The Wall" - Option available from Groovy Yurts only includes the frame that is inserted into the structure. The heat shield, pipes and extra support are not available from us and the hole must be drilled by the customer.
